BAL ASHA GHAR

Bal Asha Ghar, a project which has come under SAMPARC™ Management since August 2005 for running and taking care of children of sex workers from red light area from an organization based in Mumbai who were unable to run the program efficiently. Bal Asha Ghar is situated at Nandgaon, a hilly and remote area, 16 kms from Lonavla.
Initially the children were not adjustable to the surroundings when SAMPARC™ took over the responsibility of running the Balgram. They were not interested either in studies and other extra-curricular activities. The background of the children, problems with the previous management added to the insecurity of the children .But under the able guidance of Mr Amitkumar Banerjee and his dedicated staff members, the situation has now tremendously improved and has brought about a drastic change in the children. Regular counseling, care & support have changed the children to a very large extent.

Presently, 53 children (28 boys & 25 girls) are living in a family set-up under the guidance & care of Mr.Satish Mali, the Project Incharge. The children are from the red light area of Kamathipura, Mumbai & Budhwarpeth,  Pune. The children now attend school regularly & at the same time participate in various extra curricular activities and have won accolades at the district & state level.

A Project In-charge, lady supervisor, counselor, housemothers, helpers, gardener, look after the overall well being of the children. A regular visiting doctor attends to the healthcare of the children.

There are 5 balsadans (3 for boys and 2 for girls) with kitchen and dining hall along with a community hall, medical room, counseling room, staff quarters and playground. The facilities for accommodation were improved by renovating the existing structure.
The children show interest in their own self-development also. The children’s ‘BAL Panchayat’ meet is organized once in every week and this is an ideal platform to address various issues of children, discuss them and solve them within themselves.

The primary children are attending the Zilla Parishad Prathamik Shala Nandgaon the middle school children go to Zilla Parishad Shala Ambawane, the high school students go to Sonavane Walunj School,

The children from the centre participate in the Inter School Competitions held in the Vandra Village. The children in the centre take keen interesting in painting & sketching and are very good at it. The children from the centre participate in various competitions-Rangoli, Musical Chairs, Essay Writing, drawing, Running Race, Lemon Spoon and have received various awards. The centre has recently started Karate classes for the children & a part time Karate teacher has been appointed who trains the children.

The children from the centre actively participate in the cultivation of vegetables within the premises & they also take special interest in planting & nurturing plants.

The financial transactions, care and protection of the children and various issues related to smooth functioning & progress of the centre are looked after by the Local Committee under the leadership of Mrs. Vatsalatai N Walunj, the Sarpanch of Ambavne Village along with other 7 members.
